SOLVED EXE Files Wont Run Cant Run EXE Files

Executable (.EXE) Files Won't Run or Can't run .EXE Files?

EXE Files Won't RunLately it seems that viruses and malware is getting more and more viscious. Part of my IT business is doing PC repair in my local market and I've noticed an increasing trend, expecially when removing fake antivirus programs.

After removal, they have a nasty habit of making it impossible to run executables, and every thing you try to run opens the Open With window, and asks you to select the Default Program.

You'll also find that programs like msconfig and cmd.exe will give you the "unable to locate component" error when trying to run them.

NOTE: Those programs will run if you Right-Click on the executable file or program shortcut and select "Run as Administrator."

{PROBLEM}

These malware programs and viruses will corrupt the registry associations for all exe files

{SOLUTION}

Select your operating system below, unzip the .reg file to your desktop and double click the extracted file. Your operating system will prompt you, asking if you are sure if you want to merge the data in the registry file into your registry. Select yes and the merge will happen. You will be prompted with a confirmation letting you know if it were successful.

If successful, the changes are immediate and you will be able to properly run exe files again.

{ONE MORE STEP}

In most cases after removing a virus, it is highly recommended that you run the System File Checker. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.

If you are on vista or windows 7, click Start, and in the search box, type cmd.  In the results, right-click on the cmd.exe file and select Run as Administrator. You will be prompted to allow by UAC (User Account Control) for permission. Click Continue and the program will open.

Windows XP users can simply click on Start > Run and type cmd in the run box and press Enter. If the Run dialog box isn't available, press the WINKEY + R and it will open it.

Once the command window is open, type sfc /scannnow. SFC will begin scanning all of your system files and if you are connected to the Internet, download the correct files and fix/replace corrupt ones. This process does take some time but it IS worth the wait.

The majority of computers that I run into the corrupt exe file fix needed this step to fix system files as well.
